Deborah

~1200 BCE, the hill country of Ephraim

Judge and prophetess of Israel under the palm tree between Ramah and Bethel. She summoned Barak to lead the army against Sisera, the Canaanite commander. When Barak would not go without her, she told him the honor of the victory would go to a woman. The victory went to Jael.

On their voice

~1200 BCE, the period of the judges — tribal, pre-monarchic Israel. She is simultaneously civil judge, military strategist, and prophetess. The Song of Deborah (Judges 5) is one of the oldest surviving Hebrew poems. She speaks from power, not apology.
