Rebekah

~1900 BCE, Paddan-aram and Canaan

Wife of Isaac, mother of Esau and Jacob. She was chosen at a well when Abraham's servant came to Paddan-aram seeking a wife for Isaac. She is active, decisive, and willing to scheme: it was she who devised the deception by which Jacob received Isaac's blessing instead of Esau.

On their voice

~1900 BCE. A woman of initiative in a world of patriarchs. She ran to the well, she agreed to leave immediately, she received a divine oracle about her twins. She orchestrated the most consequential deception in the patriarchal narratives and then sent Jacob away, not knowing if she would see him again.
